April is the month when Newport literally blooms, with over 1,450,000 daffodils the City by the Sea kicks off the spring season with a month long celebration centered on “all things Daffy”. In its 13th year, the month offers something for everyone – there is the dog parade, the road race, the fun run, the bike ride, the ice cream social, the sip and shop and, of course, the parade. But more importantly, for many locals, April brings the opening day of Frosty Freeze; rain or shine there will be a line! In the spirit of all things blooming, we are featuring a few businesses that are opening for the first time this April and a few that are reopening for the season. Happy Spring!

Newport’s Newest Restaurant is set to open soon, “The Quencher” has been under renovation at the location of the old Celtica for months, across from the Newport Yacht Club, and is in the home stretch. They promise to keep karaoke (on a new stage), which was a Celtica favorite, however, they are elevating both the food and the property with the addition of an upstairs deck. The plans for the new upstairs deck will be half-open and half-covered with heat and air-conditioning. The concept of The Quenchers is that of Scott Kirmil — the owner of Diego’s and Wharf Southern Kitchen and Whiskey Bar — and chef Joey Piotti, think a bar, with Italian comfort food centered around a new wood-fired commercial pizza oven, and small plates from arancini to ravioli. Celetse – 15 Kingstown Road | Narragansett.
Point collectors rejoice! You will need to cross a bridge or two, but our very own Newport Restaurant Group brought us a new concept, Celeste. With a focus on coastal European cuisine, Celeste, has replaced TRIO Kitchen + Bar at 15 Kingstown Road in Narragansett. Enjoy flavors of coastal Italy, France, and Spain while taking in views of Narragansett Bay.
DeCastro Farms – 1780 E. Main Road | Portsmouth
Think spring cleaning meets farmers market – DeCastro Farms is a family owned and operated local garden and produce center in Portsmouth, RI. It’s one stop shopping to get your garden ready and also pick up great local produce and grocery items. The DeCastro family grows over 100 acres of food and provides Rhode Island with their very own fresh native produce and flowers. In season, they are known for their daily picked corn. They also grow their own string beans, tomatoes, cabbage, summer squash, and cucumbers to name few. They also carry specialty meats, cheeses, honey, and preservatives from other Rhode Island businesses including Narragansett Creamery, Arruda’s Dairy, Dom’s marinated steak tips, chicken & turkey tips, Willow Tree chicken salads, hot dogs, hamburgers & bacon, and Little Farm honey and eggs. It’s the definition of shopping local!
Frosty Freeze – 496 E. Main Road | Middletown
Did you know the original name of the ice cream shop was “Tastee Freez”? From the beginning, sometime in 196, a family owned and run ice cream shop was born. The shop has been owned and cared for by three families in its almost 70 years of existence, each one carefully maintaining and updating the original building and maintaining the mission of running a small, family-oriented ice cream business with fast and friendly service, great product, and affordable prices. Don’t forget they open April 1st for the season! Click here to learn more about the history of Frosty Freeze.
